For five consecutive years, ThreatQuotient has proudly embraced World Rhino Day on September 22nd as an opportunity to spotlight the extraordinary efforts of Helping Rhinos in safeguarding rhinoceros populations within their natural habitats. Today, we are thrilled to share the latest updates on this vital mission, the ongoing initiatives to support rhinos, and fresh ways for you to get involved with Helping Rhinos.

Over the past 50 million years, rhinoceroses have graced our planet with their presence. However, due to rampant poaching and habitat destruction, their population has plummeted from 500,000 at the dawn of the 20th century to around merely 27,000 today. In our commitment to helping these majestic creatures, ThreatQuotient has taken a bold step by adopting four rhinos through our partnership with Helping Rhinos.

This year Helping Rhinos is celebrating their 10 year mark. Most recently, as a part of their efforts within local communities across South Africa, Helping Rhinos has provided funding for the construction of the Speakman School in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The establishment of the Speakman School represents a pivotal step towards nurturing a new generation committed to safeguarding both their land and the wildlife inhabiting it. 

Helping Rhinos has made significant strides in advancing their mission, and we are delighted to share three noteworthy highlights:

1. African Rhino Conservation Collaboration (ARCC) is working to strengthen the airwing component of the local Anti-Poaching effort by increasing “eyes in the sky” for a number of rhino-holding reserves. Not only does the consistent presence of small planes in the air over game reserves offers a significant deterrent to potential poachers, but incident response time has improved. 
2. Helping Rhinos also funds the Black Mambas, South Africa’s first all-female anti-poaching unit. ThreatQuotient remains a proud sponsor of Nocry Mzimba, now a Sergeant in the 36-member team of women that patrols 50,000 hectares of the Balule Nature Reserve. This raises awareness of the rhino poaching crisis in surrounding villages. Through generous donations, the Black Mambas’ operations center is up and running, complete with computers, radios and grid maps.
